I've setup a website with the aim of raising £100 for the victims of the
tsunami in SE Asia.
Please try to help in any way you can.

Why not just go direct to http://www.dec.org.uk/ and give?

That way you would be certain that the money would actually get there and
fast.

No, Gareth most certainly isn't a scammer -- he's been around on these
astro NGs for a very long while -- he's just a very decent guy with a
big heart. He doesn't deserve that sort of defamatory comment made about
him.

However, I agree that it's easier to give via one of the already set-up
aid agencies. I prefer Medecins sans Frontieres; it's a group whose work
I've admired since the 1980s in Afghanistan, and you know darned well
most of what you give goes where it is intended for, not into the
pockets of the administrators. You can gift-aid donations via CAF (they
get the income tax you've paid on it as well) at:

Best,
Stephen

Well, I apoligise if he is on the level. But these days, how is anyone
to tell who a scammer is and who isn't. You know as well as I that you
really can't trust anyone these days, especially on usenet. People's
emails can be spoofed and url's redirected so easily that it just
isn't worth taking the risk. I decided to give 30 quid of my hard
earned money, even though after Saturday I'll be jobless. So forgive
me if I want to make sure my money is "well spent". I went to
www.dec.org.uk They are an umbrella group set up to distribute the
donations to the rightful orgs. And as they are being advertised by
the BBC I hope I can trust them.

Hi Sayf

There are individuals out there who really do care, but feel frustrated.
That gut wrenching feeling of not being able to really help.
I feel like that tonight.
I'm just trying to help in some small way.

Obviously there are the big organisations that people feel secure dealing
with, and with good reason.
But that doesn't mean that individuals can't make an effort either.

Thanks Stephen for the endorsement :-)

Gareth

Gareth,

It was not my intention to "defame" an honest person. And we are all
frustrated by not being able to help in a more personal way. It seems
so sterile to just give some money and then only be able to watch the
24 hour news channels to see if our donation helps. I've looked into
trying to volunteer in some way (as I'm going to have a lot of free
time soon :-) ), but it seems like a long process to do such a thing.
You can't just show up and say: "What can I do?"

Anyway, I do apologise again.

-Sayf
