Default 2029 - Torino scale 4

Thought I'd have a quick look at the news (well Slashdot actually)
before bed. Wish I hadn't now :-(

Take a look at NASA's NEO program...

Date of impact currently specified as: 2029-04-13.89

Oh crap, I should have received my AP scope by about that time and the
last thing I need is a massive dust and debri cloud blanketing the
Earth. The curse of the new scope strikes again.

But seriously, with 24 years advance notice, we should start churning
out the Pratt & Whitney TRITON nuclear rocket
(http://www.nuclearspace.com/A_PWrussview_FINX.htm) ASAP and use them
to nudge it into a more stable orbit, or maybe even revive NERVA,
assumming we can do it early enough.

- Peter

(Actually, a massive dust and debri cloud blanketing the Earth would
probably make little to difference to the seeing conditions I am
currently blessed with by living in Tokyo: http://www.astro.mp)

Interesting moral dilemma. Knowing the date when it all comes to an
end.....

What proportion of the population would go mad? "Nutters"?
What proportion of the population would live it up regardless of
consequence or harm done to others? "Bandits"?
What proportion would do what it could to make life easier for
everybody? "Angels"?
What proportion would turn to religion and pray to save themselves?
"Hypocrites"?
What proportion would try and carry on as if nothing was going to
happen? "Ostriches"?
What proportion would try building (or buying) a deep bunker?
"Survivalists"?
Is the end of the world worse than the death of any single man or woman
or child?
If they died minutes before the end of the world would the personal
tragedy be any the less?

My own guess is that the world would swiftly descend into anarchy and
chaos. With local warlords controlling the remaining tinned food
supplies until they dwindled into nothing.

A few people might find a hidden sanctuary where food could be grown on
a small scale. "Growers"? Until the armed robbers came along and
destroyed it all and themselves. Perhaps they might be just bright
enough to use the growers as slaves? But perhaps I'm just an optimist!
;-)

Include that in URL: ... , as below, and those with good software will
not need to notice the wrap.

Sometimes people post immensely long URLs and they don't wrap in my
newsreader (Agent) and sometimes long ones do - as did yours and
Stephen's. URL... made not difference. It's this random contrariness
that keeps the net from conquering us by ensuring that we have blood
pressure raising blistering rages every now and then.

Cheers

Martin
