Simon There are a couple of patches on the Meade website for autostart that you may wish to download before you plug in your camera. THe latest one, dated 20/12 is to fix some problems with USB1.1. I've installed the patch and no longer get the blue screen of death, although the camera does not work. The recommended approach (from the Meade DSI group on yahoo) is to install autostar and the patch before plugging the camera in. When installing the driver, navigate to the directory containing the driver (under program files/meade/autostar/dsi/driver/ & then your OS) rather than letting Windows search - apparently it can sometimes pick the driver for the wrong OS (win2K/xp or win98). I'm just deleting and re-installing while I type this - if it doesn't work, I'll be doing plan B tomorrow, which is to buy a USB2 card. Regards Shim |

Unfortunately I read your post after I installed the software :-( , but the good news is that it worked first time, both on my old Windows ME/USB 1.? laptop and my WinXP/USB2 desktop. Maybe I'm just lucky :-) I did have to show Windows ME where the driver was, which the installer told me to do. Now I just need to hook it up to a telescope and check it really gets an image. Simon |

Regards Shim If it's for a laptop be sure to get a powered pcmcia card, i.e. one with an external power adapter. I think scan.co.uk have one for about £14. Simon |

I am an advanced Windows user (built, installed, programmed and problem solved on PC systems for the past 10 years) and this thing was driving me crazy!! I have spent the last day installing and uninstalling the entire AS for my DSI (Christmas present) on 3 different Windows XP computers. Two of these were laptops with USB 1.1 (one XP Home, other XP pro) and the other was a desktop with both 1.1 (on the MB) and 2.0 (add-in card). All would indicate that a USB device was attached but would never install the drivers and gave me an error that an attached USB device was not functioning properly. I have been Googling all over the place without any success. I was getting ready to call Meade this morning to see if they could offer any help when I got an idea, could it be the USB cable? I have some similar USB cables laying around from external HDs (I use Firewire rather than the USB connection). Plugged it in and it worked first try. Thought I would post this to try and limit others' frustration. Including keywords at top so people can find this with search function. Meade may have gone low bidder on their cable supplier.
