Founder George Ellery Hale Free At Altadena Library, 2:30 P.M. Sunday Nov. 28 Please join us in the Altadena Public Library’s Community Room, 2:30 P.M. on Sunday, November 28, for a free program that will celebrate the Mount Wilson Observatory’s 100th anniversary. Los Angeles filmmakers Todd and Robin Mason will present an informal hour-long discussion and preview of the some of the unique materials they have collected during the making of their forthcoming television documentary, The Journey to Palomar, about the life of George Ellery Hale and the founding of Yerkes, Mount Wilson, and Palomar observatories. The Masons will also share some behind-the-scenes experiences they have had in creation of the documentary. The Masons have been researching and filming the documentary over the past several years. They have traveled to Yerkes Observatory, as well as filming at Mount Wilson and Palomar, and conducted on-camera interviews with top astronomers, historians, authors, and others around the United States related to the story. They expect to complete the project some time in the coming year. Free refreshments, including a Centennial cake, will be served beginning at 2:00 P.M. This program, which celebrates Mount Wilson Observatory’s first 100 years since its founding in December, 1904, will begin with a very brief business meeting of the Mount Wilson Observatory Association, including the election of three MWOA Board of Trustees members. Incumbents Shirley Burt, Bob Eklund, and Don Nicholson have been nominated for re-election. The Altadena Library is at 600 E. Mariposa Street in Altadena, two stop signs west of Lake Avenue at the corner of Mariposa and Santa Rosa Avenue (Christmas Tree Lane). Exit the 210 freeway at Lake and go approximately 2½ miles north to Mariposa Street in Altadena. The program is in the library’s Community Room. Refreshments will be served beginning at 2:00 P.M. All are welcome, and there is no charge. The Mount Wilson Observatory Association (MWOA) is a public-membership support group for the Mount Wilson Observatory. Its goal is to help the public better understand the Observatory’s unique history and ongoing scientific work. For information about MWOA membership, contact Don Nicholson, MWOA President, at (310) 476-4413, , check the MWOA web site, www.mwoa.org, or write to: MWOA, P.O. Box 70076, Pasadena, CA 91117. |
