Have you noticed the influx of farm-raised salmon in the supermarkets
in the last few years? At first it was just a lower priced alternative. But it has gotten to the point now that some stores don't even carry the wild salmon varieties anymore. The Atlantic farm-raised salmon that is being sold today does not taste as good as wild Chinook, and it is not as good for you. The pen-raised fish don't have the high levels of heart healthy and tasty oils that the wild Chinook have. Also the farm raised fish are artificially colored with a pink die to make them look like a sea run fish. Now the testing of these farmed fish has shown they have a high level of cancer causing PCB's. They have become just another one of the foods at your store that contain cancer-causing substances (mostly from preservatives). If the cancer rate weren't going through the roof already, something would be funny! Who needs cigs? It also has become another of the growing list of foods that have lost their traditional flavor (tomatoes, strawberries, milk). I can understand how people would rather pay $2.95/lb. for their fish rather than $7.95/lb. But the your choice is gradually being lost, even if you do have the extra bucks in your pocket. Gresham's law states, "Bad money drives good money out of circulation." In this case, it is the bad fish that are driving the good fish out of the market place!
