Default Full story of the Huygens Communication 'Cock-Up'

My cover story in this month's SPECTRUM on how smart 'rocket scientists'
discovered, diagnosed and repaired a fatal flaw in the Cassini-Huygens comm
system -- this is a GREAT achievement and the ESA team deserves high praise:

"Titan Calling -- How a Swedish engineer saved a once-in-a-lifetime
mission to Saturn's mysterious moon"

""Budget was a key part" of this decision, explained Robert Mitchell,
program manager for the Cassini-Huygens Mission[ ---clip---]"We had three
safety nets set up to catch things like Cassini-Huygens's communications
problem," said John Credland, head of ESA's scientific projects, "and it now
appears that we fell through all three."

Faster-better-cheaper is going to be a hard legacy to break.

Any reason to think he won't simply continue working for ESA?

I suppose it's possible that they do things differently in Europe.

So you expect the guy who found the problem will get the axe, while the
Eye-ties who created the problem will keep drawing salaries and
eventually retire with honor?
