RELEASE: 04-53

NASA SELECTS FIRM TO FORMULATE GOES INSTRUMENT

NASA has awarded a contract to Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company for the
formulation phase to perform design and risk reduction for the Solar Imaging
Suite (SIS). The SIS will fly on the Geostationary Operational Environmental
Satellites (GOES)-R Series scheduled for launch in 2012. The GOES
satellites are managed and operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA).

The SIS will monitor solar activity for the GOES-R Series of geo-synchronous
satellites to replace and augment the current GOES-N series of space weather
instruments. Under the terms of the firm fixed price contract, the company
will study both the minimum SIS operational requirements, as well as goal
requirements.

The period of performance of the contract is 18 months, and the firm fixed
price is $6M. The principal work will be performed at Lockheed Martin
Advanced Technology Center, Palo Alto, CA. Additional work will be
performed at the following subcontractor facilities including, the
University of Colorado, Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP)
in Boulder, Colo., and at the Naval Research Laboratory, in Washington, DC.

The GOES Program is managed by NOAA, which establishes requirements,
provides funding, and distributes environmental data for the United States.
NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., procures and manages the
acquisition of the GOES satellites for NOAA.

For information concerning this procurement, please contact the Contract
Specialist, Don Bossé, 301/286-4472 or the Contracting Officer, Tammy
Seidel, 301/286-8124. The GOES-R Series Project Manager for this procurement
is Michael Donnelly, 301/286-1627.
