Default This occured to me while listening to an International Star Registry radio spot

In these ads, it is stated that the new name of a previously only
numerically designated star will be kept in copyrighted book form in the
U.S. Patent Office. Hmmm. . .perhaps one day some lucky geologist will
chance upon a stone (hidden deep within a Middle Eastern cave) that reveals
which ancient nomad(s) owned the copyright for "Gienah Ghurab," "Yed
Posterior," "Nodus Secundus," and "Tejat Posterior."

In the mean time, it is a pretty safe bet that the "life plus 75(?) years"
clause on copyrights has expired on these names so feel free to throw them
around here and there and everywhere with crediting their source. ;o)

I think you misheard. It's filed in the "U.S. Copyright Office."

They have lots of fiction there.

I've often thought some enterprising soul should set up a web site where you
can pick your own star - for free. "Have your name associated with a star!"
It could include an option to have your name added to a public database of
"name associations," and the ability to print a chart and nice certificate
on your home printer.

Lacking such a site, folks could certainly pick one on their own, and use a
planetarium program to print a chart. Sue and I have "our" star - W Ursae
Majoris - propery registered in our weddding bands.

Clear skies, Alan

Ahhhh. . .yep, you are correct.

Thanks, Mojo.

Actually, as with many of my posts which may not appear at first reading to
have any real intent or direction (like my "Full Moon Names" post of a few
months back) I actually posted this to provide people with some interesting
and odd names of a few stars. Everybody knows of Altair, Enif, Deneb, and
Arcturus. . .now they have something which can be dropped in most any
conversation (with polished segue skills, of course g) to either amaze or
bore the listener.

Regards,

Martin

Great idea! Print this post, then cut off at the dotted lines.
Alternatively, you might wish to paste the text into your Mac's page

I do this for friends and family who ask me about buying a star. I use
this web site http://outreach.jach.hawaii.edu/birthstars/ to pick an
appropriate naked eye star, then print out a star chart for them to find
thier star and a little certificate with the following verbiage:

Let it be known to all that the star located at Right Ascension 4:5:20.3
and Declination 22:0:32.1 will hereafter be known to the family and friends
of John Doe as "John" This star is 54.5 light years away, which means that
the light we see from it today set off on its journey at about the same
time that John Doe was born.

This is great, Davoud!!! Now we need a place to file the completed form(s).
.. .may I be so bold as to suggest emailing them to the International Star
Registry and put them on notice not to touch or assign the star?

Here is the appropriate link: http://www.starregistry.com/contact.cfm

This action will certainly upset quite a few people around there g
