www.google.com

Click on Images and type "Estonian Bernard Schmidt ". Should bring up a 27k
JPG

No such luck with Sieur Guillaume Cassegrain. Not too many kodak moments in
the 1600's... As a sculptor he should have at least had the contacts for a
'masque de mort'?

Later

The classic Scientific American: Ingall's: Amateur Telecope Making,
Book Three page 370 has a picture of Schmidt at his poishing machine
testing objectives. A short chapter about the great optician is also
to be found there. Pages 365-375. Fascinating stuff.

Can't help with Cassegrain though.

There seems to be some dispute about the identity of the M.Cassegrain of
telescope fame. He is variously described as Sieur Guillaume Cassegrain
[a sculptor] and Laurent Cassegrain [a priest and teacher].
These seem to be two different persons who were more or less
contemporaries.
I had no luck searching for images of either.
[Of course it is remotely possible that both gentlemen produced
innovative telescope designs!]

There is at least one photo of Schmidt, which appears in A.T.M. book 3.
There is also a a puzzle here. Texts suggest that Schmidt destroyed his
right forearm and hand in a childhood accident when he was experimenting
with an explosive mixture. However, in my copy of A.T.M.3 he appears to
be using his right hand and it is his left forearm which is missing.
It may be that the photo has been flipped left to right as this was
often done for 'artistic' reasons.

Not in my ATM3. His left arm is propped on the bench as he looks from
left to right while testing objectives.

A Google image search shows two identical (but different sized) images
of Bernard Schmidt from Palomar Observatories files. Schmidt is shown
with a similar (though different) grinding and polishing machine to
that in ATM3. His left arm and hand show clearly. The packing case
that Schmidt appears to be perched on clearly shows the word "Flint"
for true image orientation.
