The bare bones cost of landing 200kg on the moon would probably be
in the range of $50 million if there were off the shelf technology.
More reasonably two to four times that cost.
A "tree" of ten stereo cameras, pairs spaced a couple feet apart
on rotating horizontal arms, could be put on a rover bulked up for a
lowered center of gravity with lunar soil scouped on board. High
resolution pictures could be transmitted back every second or so to
save bandwidth.
If controlling a camera sold for $10 a pair, maybe $6 each, per
minute, it could bring in $50M a year. Just watching could be
subsidized by advertising. With a movable up-down link established,
ten smaller "toddlers", each with a camera pair and soil arm could set
about closer examination, with control and advertising at the same
rate.
Rocks and craters could be named for a price, perhaps sanctioned
by the UN, for a price. Handwriting on a computer screen could be
transfered to the moon and perhaps command a price of $40/min,
$100M/yr if fully utilized. The exercise would double as a shallow
excavation. Interesting samples could be collected for perhaps a $100
per gm down payment on a hoped for $1000/gm eventual recovery. Left
in clear shopping type bags along the path, each toddler might sack
100 kg/yr, for $100M/yr total.
Virtual presence paradise, $100M. Moon dust imprinting, $100M.
Naming and advertising, $100M. Refundable if lost collections, $100M.
Reality without the rose coulored glasses, maybe $100M total.
Start out at the Apollo 17 site and follow astride, without
covering the tracks of, Schmitt and Cernan. Mount an investigation of
to the crash site of the ascent stage a few miles away, on steep
terain, with a few toddlers. Set out for parts unknown and share in
the adventure.
