I saw a strange object in the western sky earlier today (Sydney Australia),
very low on the horizon at about 5pm local time. It looked like very short orange-reddish con trail (twin trails) that ended in a ball that looked like an explosion (but I don't think it was). It changed slowly over the course of 10- 15 mins that I saw it, but didn't seem move in relation to the sky sphere (ie it was stationary in the sky but was setting at about the same pace as the moon would set, which doesn't seem to suggest it was an atmospheric object). I don't think it was a comet or otherwise I think I would have heard/read about it! Did anyone else see it? Darrell |

Darrell It's hard not to think that it was in fact a remnant jet contrail that had deveoped and contorted over time. The sun is only a few minutes from setting and I have noted that jets trails are orange in colour in the west at sunset due to preferntial red filtering of light in the atmosphere at this time. The "celestial motion" may be due to a high altitude slowly wind carrying it along. Martin -- Replace username: mlewicki Relpace dot delimited numbers with ozemail com au |
