Another plug for my live online meteor (and other ionization-causing
phenomena) observation site.... The Quadrantids Meteor Shower is kicking off the New Year well with an expected 120 meteors/hr (ZHR 120). The shower started on the morning of 1st Jan and will run for 5 or 6 days, but the peak is apparently quite sharp, with a rapid rise to the peak occurring over only a few hours. The expected peak will be on the morning of Sunday 4th Jan between 04:00 and 06:00 utc, though the 3rd could be worth watching too. In theory, the maximum meteor rate will be similar to the Geminids shower last month. Again, conditions for visual observers is not good, mainly because the moon is quite full, which will stop all but the strongest meteors being seen. More likely (in the UK) it will be cloudy again!! (Now for the plug!) Radio observation is not affected by these problems. See and hear the Quadrantids live online at http://tinyurl.com/w6pv. The next decent shower after this is in April, so don't miss this one! Andy G7IZU. http://tinyurl.com/w6pv -- Andy Smith |
