Default Concentration of Lunar Craters

Looking at photographs of the cratering on the Lunar surface, it
appears that there are a larger concentration of craters near both the
lunar poles than average over the lunar surface.

Does anyone have an idea what the reason for this phenpmenon could be?

Thanks

I'd say that the geological resurfacing wasn't as extensive on the poles, so
it left a larger number of old craters there, but it's just me guessing. I'm
sure there are guys who know plenty more about this, so I'll leave it to
them :-)
