Not really. The magnetosphere still filters out most of the radiation
and what little that gets past generally affects only at higher alitudes
like airplanes and power lines.

The only way your computer would be affected is if you use wireless
mouse, keyboard, or network and even that may not happen.

The only time I'd be concerned is when someone nears the equator can see
both Northern lights and Southern lights.

No I wouldnt worry about it. Thunder storms are a different matter, I
have through cost and experience noted that any hint of a thunder storm
then turn the computer off, unplug from the mains, disconnect from
the phone socket etc, completely isolate the computer.

Only a few months ago without any warning, no weather forecast
prediction at all, then suddenly out of the blue..BANG, one big clap
of thunder, didnt even see the lightening, the electric went off, the
computer obviously crashed. It blew the motherboard, soundacard
modem etc. The TV, video, freezer everything else came back on
a few seconds later but alas no computer. It has happend befor
several times but only left a modem not working. So if therers
any hint of a storm I always completely unplug it.

Hi Kevin Here in Florida the capital for lightning I use my
computer(webtv) from 7am till 7pm mostly for business and posting "what
if" When my web gets hit,and goes out,and I get it back it always asks
me the same question "Did I Move" I just hope those space probes going
to Mars are not short circuit out there in that cold no shielding medium
of space. Kevin the nice thing about being in a space ship going through
space on a long trip it gives you a chance.to think. Still its a good
idea to talk Sharon Stone to come along for the ride. Bert

LOL, does your wife know about these Sharon Stone thoughts?.
I usualy leave my computer on all the time except when I go out or
go to bed. Considering micro chips are in almost everything these days
I dont know why my TV and other electrical equipment seem imune to
thunderstorms. After maybe the third modem failed to work after a
storm I contacted the phone people but they assured me there is nothing
wrong with the phone line. I contacted the electric people on the off
chance they might have a sugestion, they didnt. I guess I have just been
unlucky. Even people I have spoken to about this in the area who also have
computers have not had the problems with storms that I seem to have.

Just in case someone up there has it in for me I have now become very
wary of thunderstorms. I was reassured somewhat after reading an account
of a woman who has now been struck by ligthening three times and is still
alive. Shaken but alive!, the bookmakers wont accept anymore bets on her
being struck a fourth time..

I myself fried two modems, each the same way - I unplugged the power cord,
but failed to unplug the phone line... :-( The summer storms are very
dangerous concerning thunder (both my modems died in the summer). Turns out
that the second time it happened, it not only destroyed the modem, but the
phone cable also! Must have been quite an electrical current there...
Anyway, I've learned my lesson - whenever I smell a storm out there,
off-line I go :-)

Cheers.

Yeah, best to be safe. I even used to listen a lot to mp3's through
headphones while surfing the net, not anymore, now I have it
out through the speakers, dont mind if the speakers get blown but
I would like to keep my ears.
