Dear Friends,
The impossible just happened! We had an aurora in Greece and this is something which is virtually impossible due to our great distance from the earth's geomagnetic pole. I will post a link to the photos shortly as I must prepare the HTML for ftp transfer to my website. I never expected to see an aurora here in Greece in my wildest dreams! Anthony. |

Now you know why the phenomenon is called "Aurora"! :-) (Curiosity: Is the Greek word for the phenomenon anything to do with Eos?) Good for you. The word "aurora" does have to do with "eos" ... however, when used astronomically (ie. aurora borealis), we use "boreio stelas" (soft "b" as in "v") where I think you can see the similarity between "borealis" and "boreio" (the latter in Greek means northern). However, I do not know the origin of "stelas" and to what extent it is from the ancient Greek (for example) or not. Anthony. Best, Stephen Remove footfrommouth to reply |

Anthony,
Thanks for the Greek lesson! :-) Oh, and I completely concur with what Pete has said about the organisation/presentation of your web site. *Very* nice indeed! Hi Martin, Lovely pictures- that coolpix handles long exposures rather well, doesn't it. Thank you for the kind words. As for my Coolpix, it is scarry the amount of mileage I am getting out of it .... and, of course, quality mileage! I am also waiting for the Xmas specials so as to pick-up a Canon Rebel 300d (digital) and the only reason is that it allows prime focus work whereas with my Coolpix is afocal projection. Cheers Did you have any luck with the aurora from last night? Anthony. Martin -------------- Martin Frey N 51 02 E 0 47 -------------- |
