Default A Multi-Disciplinary Effort: *** Hilal (Crescent Moon) Sighting: Eve Thu//Fri 17/18 Jun 2004 (late) ***

Hello all,

Follow-ups: sci.astro.amateur

The sighting of the Hilal (Crescent Moon) involves many disciplines in
addition to plain astronomy.

As the photons from the Sun are reflected on the Lunar surface and travel
towards the Earth, they are absorbed, scattered and diffracted by the
Earth's atmosphere.

Physics is used to model these phenomena as well as the colors of the
twilight sky and the contrast between the twilight sky and the very thin
Hilals.

Meteorology is used to obtain the properties of the atmosphere.

Optics is used to model the additional contrast and resolution that can be
obtained with a naked eye observation as compared to an optically aided
(binocular/telescope) observation with the affects (reflection/absorption)
of multi-layer optical coatings on the optical surfaces.

Clear skies to all and cheers.

Of course. But what has this post got to do with optics and/or physics?

What has the visibility of the young crescent Moon got to do with
optics? Hmm. Tricky one, that ... NOT!

Best,
Stephen
