Default Venus Transit

Contrary to the perpetual expectations of the Chicken Littles of the
world, Venus passed on a line (allowing a visible transit across the
face of the sun) between the Earth and the Sun, with no disasters or
doom.

In 8 years time, because of the well established laws of celestial
mechanics, it will do so again.

In the meantime, I took some photographs.

We had well over 500 attendees to our event, and they were all
interested in the event. Not one of the members of the public, nor the
school children who came, were worried about the sky falling on our
heads. They were all too intelligent. Pity for the poor chicken
littles of the world, There's 500 more smart people who know the
prophets of doom are nutjobs.

I just received an e-mail from my friend Bill Propp, a producer and
sometimes host of Bob Fass's "Radio Unnameable" on WBAI FM in NY, who
viewed the transit from the upper east side of Manhattan. He said :

"Carl Schurz Park was definitely the right place to be if left with
not many resources, as was my situation. There was an abundance of
optical equipment with which to view the transit . . Even before
anybody there got a look, there was a guy walking around showing
high-quality color prints of the view as it had already appeared in
Europe that he downloaded from a website. ."

". . Anyone who missed this must now be suffering from "Venus
envy."

Nice animation - well done. It captures that initial feeling of history
being made!

Thanks
