Default Astronomy Night and Battle!

Today was Astronomy day, so I had everything ready and loaded into the
Beast. I went up to the Foster Freeze and had me a byte to eat and
then I set up. That's when things went down hill. A bunch of guys from
the local vet outfits had picked tonight to put on a support the war
deal. They got the ok from the FF owner to hook up to the power of the
light stand out by the corner to set up a music and pa system. I
turned around and saw very big boombox SP's being set up, so I figured
I'd better move down the sidewalk a bit, just then this woman comes up
and says she's the FF owner and says because of what's going on, I
shouldn't be there at all tonight!

I told her I was moving down the PUBLIC sidewalk and would not be in
their way, she then says that SHE owns the sidewalk and can tell me to
leave at any time, that I had never gone in and ASKED them if I could
set up there. I looked her right in the eyes and told her I was on
PUBLIC sidewalk and I could set up any time, day or night and as long
as I didn't block the sidewalk and didn't sell anything or have an
unsafe operation, she couldn't do anything. She then said she would
call the cops, I said be my guest and when on to moving my stuff.

Well, she did call'm, they came and talked to someone inside ( she had
left ) and came out to me and didn't say a word about me moving, they
asked me questions about Astronomy and the bright lights ( Venus /
Jupiter ) in the sky. After about 10 mins, they went back, said
something, and left.

In a nut shell, THIS Vietnam Vet stood his ground and I knew my rights
and I won.

So during the other deal, I had kids from those folks coming over and
taking looks at the moon and venus. What a mob. About 8:30 it all
broke up and everyone left, that's when the people I know who stop by
all showed up and got a good tour of the planets and moon. By 10pm
when the FF closed up I had passed out all the goodies NASA/JPL had
sent me and I packed up to come home.

6 years ago this month I started giving views from the corner and in
all that time no one ever said anything, before leaving she told me
about how on June 5th they'll have there cruse night for the car club,
well, I've been there every year since that was started at the corner
and will be this year too.

You also helped the cops with their natural inquisitiveness of the
night sky, so it's a double victory!

Bravo!

I read your message at 7AM East coast time. That's pretty early in the
morning out there in California.

I hope the applause didn't wake you up.

You are doing terrific PR and education out there. I hope you'll keep
it up for a long time.

I haven't been moved to post to a news group in several years but
couldn't sit idle this time.

Some details I forgot to post, I also had my 20x80 Bino's set up on a
tripod and the kids ( all those people taking part in the other event
sent their kids my way ... I was a teacher for a good almost 2 hours )
and the kids loved looking at the moon threw them. As it was I passed
out all the kids stuff that JPL had sent me for that day. I had my Sky
Atlas 2000 with me and I showed kids how I could use it out in the
field to find stars, had to keep that a few feet from them. Just would
hold it up to show the pages.

It was nice when the whole group left, my ears still ring from the
sound level they had it cranked up.

What got me was seeing the owner LEAVE ( and not come back! ) before
the cops showed up. Besides, the cops all know me, after all, 6 years
this May of sitting out there, I've talked to all of them and they
aprove of what I do, so they are on my side to start with, it pays to
talk to the local fuzz.

I gave out the last of my old Astronomy magazines too.
