Default OT - BASIC Interpreter

There is a simple BASIC astro program that I want
to run. Is there a simple freeware BASIC
interpreter that could be recommended that will
run on an XP PC?

If you don't mind the effort of tweaking it into a more modern form of BASIC
(which is usually very simple) you should be able to rename it with a VBS
extension and run it directly using the VBScript facility that is built into
Windows.

The old QBASIC interpreter from DOS and early Windows will run in an XP command
shell. A few functions won't work right, involving I/O and some types of screen
writes, but you should easily be able to work around those (assuming you have an
old DOS diskette around somewhere to get QBASIC from in the first place).

You could try "Chipmunk Basic", which is freeware and available from
http://www.nicholson.com/rhn/basic/.

Microsoft QBASIC.EXE was dropped from Windows 2000, but could be
copied from Windows NT 4.0 distribution media or possibly downloaded
from somewhere. Microsoft used to have qbasic.exe on their web site,
but a minute ago I did a Google search of microsoft.com for it without
finding a downloadable file.

GWBasic and (much better) QBasic works well under WinXP. Scroll to bottom
