I was wondering why would the SETI@home team try to observe other galaxies for signs of ET signals (from the final re-observation report). Besides the magellanic clouds, M31 is some 2 million light years away. Any signal we receive would have been transmitted at least 2 million years ago (unless they transmit the signal through a wormhole ;-) ). Also, I would think such a narrowband signal would be far too faint to detect with current SETI receivers. In fact Drake's equation does not even take into account other galaxies due to their great distance. Would it not be a much more important find if a signal was detected from another galaxy? That would mean that life had started millions of years earlier than here so that the possibility of much more advanced forms could be much closer to our location.... |
