Why is the Solar System so Spread Out?

The gravity of protoplanets will disrupt each other if they are too close. As
the protoplanet nebulae pass each other the gravity between them will scatter
the nebulae and prevent coalescence. The extreme example is if the orbits are
close enough to cross the protoplanets will disrupt each other by colliding.

The asteroids might have been a planet except the material kept getting
disrupted by Jupiter.
