Full Moon and February.
24.03.03 , 12.01.04 10:52 nz.general,sci.astro.amateur,nz.test Here are some apparent facts about Full Moon and February. Don McDonald, Wellington, NZ. (E.g. Richard Hall, Carter Observatory, Radio New Zealand, 12-JAN-2004.) What is 'blue moon?' Answer- A month with 2 Full Moon's in it. A lunar month is 29.53 days (average.) Therefore, can you have 2x Full moons in the month February, 28 days? Yes. (Richard Hall, Carter Observatory WGTN, agreed- at a squeeze you can!) Nevertheless (Don) it needs to be a leap year, Feb. 29 days, and around the World, using Time Zones and International date line. [ [ Mensa International Journal, Donna Jardis [ Wellington Astronomical Soc., Brenda, Kate Nacard's column, 'ABC Words', (Mensa IJ Extra!, March 2003,) writes: The Maine Farmer's Almanac (1932) gave another definition of 'blue moon' as a season that held four new moons rather than three... . I calculated an example;- New and Full Moons for the year 2052 (All times are in GMT) NEW Tuesday 2 January 3:07 Wednesday 31 January** 18:32 (= 1 Feb. New Zealand, GMT+13hrs.) Friday 1 March ** 7:38 (= 29 Feb. Pacific Ocean, GMT-8hrs.) Saturday 30 March 18:29 Evidently, there will be NO NEW Moon at Greenwich Prime Meridian during February 2052, Leap Year. However, there should be 4 New moons between January and March. My special point is this- Therefore **2x New Moons** in February (sic). E.g. 1 in New Zealand 01 FEB 2052 (GMT +13 hrs) and another, second in Pacific Ocean, 29 FEB 2052 (GMT -minus 8 hrs.) 2x New Moons in the shortest month of year! Using dateline, timezones, and Leap year. Program Copernicus, Acorn UK, Risc_OS (Not windows.) search lunar almanac Full Moon. 600 kB 4 MB RAM. I propose, Is it possible for the World to have 2 full moons in a month with 29 days; Leap Year? (What is the nearest miss?) Consider the effects: Crossing the International Date Line gives 30 days for February, compared to synodic month 29.531 days. On the other hand, perihelion, Earth nearest to Sun, increases the interval between full moons (Kepler's Second Law of planetary motions; Earth's orbital speed increases.) And the years and months I expect would have variations. The first full moon would be in New Zealand (new zealand daylight time = Greenwich Mean Time + 13 hours) and the second somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean (GMT -minus 10 hrs.) Extremely rare. IF... there is a Valentine's Day Full Moon, 14 February, at Greenwich (GMT) and Leap year, THEN there is also a chance of 1 FEB (year 2052) New moon, New Zealand (NZ Daylight Time = GMT +13 hours) and 29 Feb 2052 New Moon, Pacific Ocean. (Table above.) How many days has the lunar month? Answer. The 'synodic month' (between 2 successive new moons) averages 29.531 days. February has average 28.2425 days, Gregorian calendar. Therefore, about once every (23 years?), February has no full moon. Example Year 1999. [Once every 6 years (terrible guess??) February has only 3 phases of the Moon somewhere on Earth. New, First Quarter, Full, Last Quarter.] .... However, I remain hopeful that, if February has no Full Moon, THEN BOTH January and March of the same year are likely to experience 2 Full Moons each! The Computer program confirms this for Year 1999.
