First, mega congrats to all the folks at NASA and JPL involved in this
awesome, awesome, landing. Haven't yet heard this question asked, but is there anything that either Spirit, or assuming a safe landing 3 weeks from now, Opportunity might be able to do to assist in determining what happened to Beagle2? Could Spirit or Opportunity actually traverse the martian landscape towards Beagle's expected landing site and look around? Just curious. MJ |

No; both the NASA landers are in completely different parts of the planet to Beagle. You'll find some good maps which show all the landing sites at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3359971.stm Regards, Chris |

Even if one of the rovers was within a few miles (and they aren't), it
would take their lifespan to search for it. The rovers have their own missions and I wouldn't want to see us give up any science for the poor Beagle. Although Mars is much smaller than Earth, Mars actually has as much surface area as Earth has dry land area. The rovers, although bigger and more powerful than little Sojourner, are still only going to be able to cover only a relatively small area. IIRC, the new rovers can go over 100 yards per day, and the mission is supposed to last 3 months. I would like to see an extended far-ranging mission after that though, if possible. It seems like 2 miles per month long range exploration would be possible, or does it need to stay close to the landing area? Spirit is way too far from Beagle, but possibly they could re-direct Opportunity to an alternate area closer to Beagle. (They shoulda sent a 9-lives cat like Sojourner, instead of a little Puppy. ![]() The Mote around the Beam? http://members.aol.com/RichClark7/read/mote.htm Getting the Right Interpretation http://members.aol.com/AVBibleTAB/av/interpre.htm |
