I discovered this by accident. When you're responding to a newsgroup
posting or email in Thunderbird, if you have a section of text highlighted (as if you're about to select & copy it), and you press the reply button, only that selection of text will get quoted in your reply. This would make it much easier to respond to long messages, without having to quote the whole conversation, and then having to trim it down in your response (or worse, not trimming it down at all, and just quoting the whole message).
