Default Just bought a tripod, Is the price fair?

Hi All

I just bought a Meade (It was advertised "LX5/2080" ) tripod with
adjustable legs and eq wedge and a compass.
Apparently it was as demo, never used!
The tripod is in mint condition. The unit is clean. I set it up and
nothing was missing.
It cost me US $228.74 total (includes. shipping + taxes)

Check the pic here, this is what I got:
http://www.henrys.cnd.com/ebay/mea-tri+wedg-k.jpg

Is it a fair price?
Based on my research, I figured that it is..
A local store (Kendrick) was selling a used LX90 variable tripod (looks
same as the LX5)without EQ wedge, for $250CAD + taxes.
A used standard wedge would have cost me about $80 to $100 CAD (it
think, its just a guess)

---------------------------------
Here is how I got it.....

I saw it on Ebay for $98.90US. The seller was Henry's (a major camera
dealer in Toronto, ON Canada). I live about 40km (25miles) from it

The shipping cost was fixed at $100US + 15% taxes.
[( $98.90 + $100) + 15%tax = $228.74]

Pick up was NOT an option. I phoned and emailed asking about pick-up
but the answer was NO.
The item is shipped from a warehouse in Toronto (i believe), not the
store. But still I could have driven!

The package was shipped one evening and I received it the following
morning. (within 15 hrs) So that was good!

Please let me know if it was a fair deal. If it wasnt (buy a little), I
will still feel satisfied.

Thanks,
VL

Hi Again,

Read my main post first.............

Also, I asked the delivery guy what the exact shipping cost was, he said
"about $25 (CAD)", I would have paid even $50CAD, but ...I paid $152 CAD
(shipping+tax on shipping)

It's a little too late to be asking your question, isn't it? Even if I
thought it was a terrible deal, I wouldn't tell you, as you already bought
it.

Hi Al

Well I feel satisfied. I wouldnt mind if you tell me. Please do. Generally I
want to know what the price is out there for such mount.

I bought this, for a Meade LX10 Deluxe UTHC w/ Lumicon DSC, counter weights,
case with foam, 80mm ST refractor piggyback, Telrad, 2 eps + 2 diagonals,
kendrick quik focus, dewshield, 2 books, and a Palm Vx which can interface
with the DSC ....for ~$800(US) it was on a fixed height meade standard tripod
without eq wedge. So overall it was a good deal.

Vimal,
This looks like the standard Meade heavy duty field tripod (i.e., the
LX50/LX90/LX200 tripod included with the 8" scopes). You've already added
up the numbers and if the wedge fits the LX10 base, I'd say you got a
reasonable deal, though it's obvious the dealer was making his profit off
the shipping and the low selling price was just a gimmick. Um, I see you
didn't get a wedge with your LX10. That's odd since they always come with a
wedge and are intended to always be polar aligned.

The tripod you bought is actually the same tripod that comes with a Meade
LX200. The wedge is the Meade standard wedge...usable, but not the best.
So the price you paid is not really that bad for "new" equipment, but you
probably could have done better by buying used.

Next time you're not sure about the fair going price for an item, do the
following...

1) Go to Astromart and do a search on what the item sold for. This will
give you the best feel for a fair price.

2) Go to eBay and search for sold items. This will also give you a feeling
for price.
