Despite the dearth of solar events, there will be high auroral
activity every night for at least 3 nights (Dec. 9, 10, and 11 and
perhaps until the 14th). This is due to a fast stream in the solar
wind during a time when the solar wind magnetic field is generally
directed southward.

The equatorward edge of the aurora near midnight will reach at
least to Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin,
Michigan and New York. In Europe, aurora will be visible from
England, Northern Europe and Russia north of 55 deg Lat. The
southern lights will be visible from Tasmania and southern New
Zealand. This is not as large an effect as was visible around the
30th of October and the 21st of November. So the southern States,
southern Europe and Australia will have to wait until that solar
active region comes around again, hopefully during the new moon
period before Christmas.
