![]() -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Sounds of Space: New 'Chorus' Recording By RBSP's EMFISIS Instrument Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2012 09:44:00 -0500 From: Sam Wormley Newsgroups: sci.physics Sounds of Space: New 'Chorus' Recording By RBSP's EMFISIS Instrument http://www.nasa.gov/mp3/687631main_6...s_chorus_1.mp3 Audio (wav or mp3) of the phenomenon known as "chorus" radio waves within Earth’s magnetosphere that are audible to the human ear, as recorded on Sept. 5, 2012, by RBSP’s Electric and Magnetic Field Instrument Suite and Integrated Science (EMFISIS). Five six-second "events" are captured in this sample, and they are played end-to-end, one right after the other, without gaps. Credit: University of Iowa. ____________________ NPR: NASA’s Radiation Belt Storm Probes mission was launched 30 August to study the Van Allen Radiation Belts, a hazardous region of space around Earth that is filled with high-energy particles. Recently, the probes recorded the clearest radio signals yet emitted by the energetic particles in Earth’s magnetosphere. See: http://blogs.physicstoday.org/newspi...sa-spacecraft/ |
