I notice that google groups archives messages back to 9/15/1994.
Anyone know if the newsgroup existed before then?
Are posts archived elsewhere before 1994 (if they exist)?

Thanks.
Etok

I was reading the S.A.A. messages via the old Muskrat.com BBS back in 93, maybe
even 92.

1994 sounds right. This group was split off from sci.astro back then to
get away from the endless arguments about various lunatic pet
astrophysical theories. This move made room for the endless arguments
about GOTO, refractors, etc. ;-)

Clear skies,
Greg

Hi Greg:

Yes...my memory is getting a little hazy, but 1994 or perhaps late 93. I never
saw it before then, anyway, my "s.a.a." before that was Fidonet Astronomy!

That was a nice "place" with the benevolent but firm hand of the
Astrophysician for a Moderator.

At the end of Fidonet, I would actually use a telnet connection through the
internet to a BBS a thousand miles from me to download my QWK packets.
Wasn't much traffic by then.

Clear Skies,
Craig in Tampa

Hi Craig:

I hung in there with FidonetAstronomy for quite a while. By the end of 1994,
though, I'd finally given up on it. Mainly because the BBSes here were dying
like flies. It was getting pretty slow the last time I looked at it. Remember
Bluewave? What a nice way to read the mail with a dialup connection!

BlueWave v2.12 was nice, especially on OS/2, but I liked Silver
Xpress even better. Those were good days.

Will there be another split for "S.A.A.A" (sci.astro.amateur.astromart)?

You know, to make room for endless arguments about...ah...stuff.

What about :
- S.A.A.Equipment
- S.A.A.Observations
- S.A.A.Library (for books, atlasses and web resources)
- S.A.A.Software

?

I kinda like the broad mix in here. Even just a touch of the
"sci.astro" type stuff adds to the flavor. Amateur astronomy is a very
broad subject, but somehow, this group seems to stay pretty much on
track. If there would be one new group, perhaps it could be
S.A.A.T.C.N.B. (Sci.Astro.Amateur.Trolls.Cranks.and Nutballs.)
