I was trying to find a head lamp (straps around your head) with red lights
but could not find any on the web. I could buy a regular white light one and modify it but was thinking it would be easier if I could just find one already set up. Thanks, -- Glenn |

Sorry, I don't have a link to where it can be found, but that's what I use some of the time. |

Petzl makes a model called the Tikka. It's an LED headlamp. Comes with a
clear plastic lens, but you can also order red and green replacement lenses. May be too bright for astronomy use. macnmotion Glenn Mulno wrote: I was trying to find a head lamp (straps around your head) with red lights but could not find any on the web. I have one of these, and I still haven't been able to pry out the white lens to
replace it with the red one. But maybe it doesn't matter. The white light has been a great convenience for setting up/tearing down my scope in the dark. No more holding a flashlight in my teeth to free up both hands. -- Curtis Croulet Temecula, California 33° 27'59"N, 117° 05' 53"W |

I was at a star party over the weekend and saw something like this (not sure
if this is the exact one though): http://tinyurl.com/sjb9 Available at Lowes. Not sure if you are in the U.S. though. I'm heading to my local one this week to get one. It was nice because the first click on brings up the red "nightvision" light first and not the bright white one which would be most convienient for observing. -riff "Glenn Mulno" wrote in message ... It was nice because the first click on brings up the red "nightvision" light first and not the bright white one which would be most convienient for observing. With a Lowe's down the street, I thought I'd give this thing a try. It sports two red LEDs and one white LED, plus a Krypton bulb that they thoughtfully provided a "spare" slot for under the reflector cap....because that's right where I moved the bulb to ;-) The rotary dial goes: off - reds - white - krypton (krypton being "off" if you've yanked the bulb) In the reds position, with three AAA cells in there, those two red LEDs burn BRIGHT. In a well-lit kitchen I stared into those suckers for a split second and ... well, let's just say I've neither seen anything a fraction as bright on anyone's head any night yet, nor would I want to subject anyone to seeing such a display on my own head. There's a recent post about replacing one of the cells with a "dummy" (referring to the similar Eveready unit). I tried that, using the ever-handy rolled up pieces of aluminum foil. With 2 out of 3 cells present, it hardly made a dent-- still bright as all get out. So I went to just one cell. Now I got barely a glow out of the red LEDs. Didn't seem like it would be enough to be useful. Hmmm. Up to my 13-year-old daughter's room for some nail polish. I covered the clear lens in front of the LEDs with some magic tape, and painted on a few coats of the darkest red in her repertoire. That's better! Just a few more coats over the (brighter) red LEDs and it should be perfect. Bonus: now there's a dimmer, of sorts: set it to the white LED position (get one LED) or to the red position (two LEDs). The tint isn't quite the same in the two positions, but this seems close enough for government work (not to disparage the government; their aurora-related data recently has been quite valuable!) and may be fine-tuned by choice of nail polish color and # of coats. -leor |

A couple weeks ago, I saw a bunch (and bought one) at WalMart. They were the
LED type and cost about $7. Boatman "Glenn Mulno" wrote in message ... I was trying to find a head lamp (straps around your head) with red lights but could not find any on the web. Glenn- I just bought one a few weeks ago at Walmart, if you happen to have one near you. I tried looking on their website, but don't seem to be able to find it. Mine has a switch that pushes one direction for red light, and the other direction for white light. Chris Nicholl |

Thanks, Although a head lamp might be convenient, I can't imaging using a light without a dimmer control for astronomy. Les Blalock http://www.txastro.com |
