Anyone know what the plans are for the display of these shuttles? I.e., are these components to be cleaned up and reinstalled, replaced with mock-ups, or what? Bob M. |

I'm sure a search will yield articles etc. on the shuttle's safing and preparation for display. The short answer is yes, they are keeping certain parts, such as main engines, that may have future use and installing non-flightworthy or mockup parts to make the shuttles look whole. Also remember that most of the shuttles have one more flight ahead of them...on the 747 transporter. For that, I would imagine that they need to be complete, or at least have proper fairings. I'd imaginge Huntsville Al will get one. Maybe the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton Ohio.{best airplane museum in world, a must see for any admirer of planes and it's free} I doubt they'd fit into the Smithsonian, Maybe the Silver Springs Annex. |

Have you been living under a rock? 1) Shuttle Enterprise, (the glider flight test airframe), will move from the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York. 2) The Udvar-Hazy Center will become the new home for shuttle Discovery, which retired after completing its 39th mission in March. 3) Shuttle Endeavour, will go to the California Science Center in Los Angeles. 4) Shuttle Atlantis, will be displayed at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor's Complex in Florida. NASA announced the destinations of the shuttles several months back. Atlantis goes to the Kennedy Space Center, Endeavour to the California Science Center in LA and and Discovery to the Smithsonian. And as a consolation prize, the Intrepid Museum in NYC gets the test mule Enterprise. I doubt they'd fit into the Smithsonian, Maybe the Silver Springs Annex. The Udvar-Hazy facility at Dulles actually. It'll fit. cheers, |

I am not sure, but the forward RCS pod is on its way to New Mexico. A caption further into the gallery says, "In Orbiter Processing Facility-2 (OPF-2) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, technicians assist as a special crane lowers space shuttle Atlantis’ forward reaction control system onto a transporter. The system, which provided maneuvering capabilities to the spacecraft during its missions, will be transported to White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico to undergo a complete deservicing and cleaning" Note that it doesn' say what will happen to it once cleaned. But other press materials may have that information. /dps |
