Default Will the US get a new manned launcher at all?

Given the economic realties of today may the government budget cutters
move away from any fiancial support for a new launch system?

tea party is hard at work demanding a balanced budget. if they get
their way will manned space survive?

I think the private launch business should build around a space
tourism model just in case....

It is entirely possible, but not likely given the politics of NASA
funding. Cutting the shuttle derived heavy launch system would be a
huge blow to Texas, Florida, Utah, and etc. Those are real jobs that
will be "lost" and the politicians from those states will lobby hard to
keep those jobs.

Yes it will survive. It survived the cuts following the end of
Apollo/Saturn development which started even before the first manned
landing on the moon.

What makes you think that private launch businesses aren't already
looking for new markets? It's clear from history that the overall
launch market isn't going to expand without new markets. Government and
commercial comsat launches are limited in number and aren't sufficient
to sufficiently support the current glut of launch vehicles, let alone
new ones.

The market is too small. How many people do you know that can afford a $40
million joyride to the ISS?

Actually, I h had to laugh when I heard about all that posturing and walking
out in the talks about the US defaulting on loans. This defaulting stuff is
just rubbish after all.

There is no chance of it, but lovely to see the antics.

Isn't NASA using some of it's Commercial Space funds to get SpaceX to
do a couple of shots of the Dragon capsule with an idea towards
man-rating it?
