Nils Toombes, a satcom enthusiast, posted a video he captured from the
STS-125 external tank camera 25 minutes after launch while it was over Europe. Not much to look at but an amazing effort nonetheless! You can see it on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WrhHRchjAc Question: does anyone know if NASA was able to successfully capture video from the tank as it entered the atmosphere as they had hoped? Has it been released? |

I think they tried to get a signal from Diego Garcia tracking station, but its still way before re-entry itself. There is a rumor that they got something, but it hasn't been released yet. Re-entry happened in such a place, that it would have been over the horizon from Australia and New Zealand too. NASA wasn't planning on having any ships on sea to capture the re-entry itself, so unless someone very lucky happened to capture something on the sea or some island on the pacific, the actual re-entry won't be seen. ![]() -- Mika Takala |

In the 3rd view within that clip it looks like you can see the shape of the tank as it tumbles ... look at about 5' 33". /dps |
