Default Tracking with an Autostar

I have a relatively small Meade DS-90 (1000mm, 90mm diameter refractor) with
the standard altitude/azimuth tripod and an Autostar controller. Has anyone
had luck getting this system to track well? I've gone through the alignment
steps and such, but it never seems to do a good job keeping the image stable.

It slows the movement through the scope a bit, but it never holds it still
enough to do long (say, just 30 seconds) exposures with my digicam. Does
anyone have advice to get the setup more accurate or stable?
