Is there a single source that pretty well describes the various star
(celestial) catalogs available in some detail. For example, no. of objects, type of objects, region of the sky surveyed, sponsor, history, etc. GSC, NGC, Hipparcos-Tycho, U. of Mich., ... |

Why not go to it via the link from CDS: http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/ There is a direct link to Catalogs there, though it seems pretty slow at the moment. Try this.
