A ways back, Zvezda was to get a pair of "wings" attached to either
side of the module to improve protection from MMOD hits. Have they been canceled or are they going to be brought up on one of the remaining two shuttle flights? |

Have they been canceled or are they going to be brought up on one of the remaining two shuttle flights? The Service Module Debris Panels (SMDP) have already been installed. I recall seeing an illustration a number of years ago depicting them as a pair of wings (as you say), but that design obviously was changed. The first set of panels was delivered to ISS during STS-111/Endeavour/ISS-14-UF2 in June 2002. They were stowed temporarily on PMA-1 during EVA 1 by Chang-Diaz and Perrin. These six panels were retrieved from PMA-1 and installed on the conical hull section of Zvezda by the ISS Exp-5 crew during Russian EVA 7 on 16 Aug 2002 (Korzun and Whitson). The rest of the panels were delivered on STS-116/Discovery/ISS-20-12A.1 in Dec 2006 and stowed on PMA-3 during EVA 3 (Curbeam and Williams). They were retrieved from PMA-3 and stowed on Zvezda by the ISS Exp-15 crew during Russian EVA 18 on 30 May 2007 (Yurchikhin and Kotov). Five of the panels were also installed on the conical hull section during that EVA. The final twelve panels were installed by the same EVA crew during the next Russian EVA on 6 Jun 2007.
