Space Weather News for Feb. 8, 2010
http://spaceweather.com BIG SUNSPOT: The sudden emergence of big sunspot 1045 over the weekend has caused a sharp uptick in solar activity. The active region has produced three M-class and almost a dozen C-class solar flares since it appeared on Saturday. The strongest blast, an M6-class eruption on Feb. 7th, may have hurled a coronal mass ejection toward Earth. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras in the nights ahead as a result of this activity. Also, ham radio operators are picking up strong solar radio bursts using shortwave receivers. Sample sounds and images may be found at http://spaceweather.com. SPACE WEATHER ALERTS: Would you like a call when the next geomagnetic storm erupts? Never seen a configuration of spots like that before.

I've just read that the GPS system is likely to go haywire as solar
activity increases. |

Fine, believe what you want to. IMO journalists who sensationalize things in order to sell advertising should be shot on sight. Europe has screwed up its own promised GPS with endless, expensive delays and bickering. Which has a great deal to do with European politics and nothing at all to do with sunspots. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8494225.stm Fearmongering. Read it through and you find that nothing much is going to happen--maybe there will be outages for a few minutes a few times a year. The rest is describing the normal operation of the system but he words it as if it's dangerously degraded. |

Sun induced geomagnetic storms can render some GPS based survey equipment useless to to interference from ionospheric currents at some latitudes. The was noted during the last solar max. Most GPS hobbyists wouldn't notice much. |
