Seeing has not been good here in Kansas City this summer and brief
P-5,6 is about as good as it has been for this apparition. Just barely
enough to be teased with the fangs of Mare Cimmerium...
This is a colored pencil and graphite drawing that I cut and pasted
into a simple graphic format. The color is very close to what I see in
a 10" reflector and a 7" f/18 achromat.

That was an excellent sketch Dan! But which scope did
you use? I could see that fangs were indeed captured!
Nicely done.

Really nice drawing, Don. I've only been able to see the fangs once (6"
APO). What interested me the most about your drawing is the color,
especially the albedo features. When seeing is okay, they look grey
with hints of blue or green. When the seeing is superior, they look
clearly just grey.......

Thanks to everyone for their compliments. I hope early Fall
can afford me with some better nights for drawings that I'll pass along
to anyone interested.

Ron: I used both scopes that night, as I often do,
but the big newtonian (246mm f/7.4 to be exact)was what served up
the surest details, and what the sketch matches in all regards,
with the exception of the background being a tad brighter than
I think the jpeg suggests.
As a side note, the newtonian is in my observatory, such that the
entrance pupil is ~20ft above the ground, with big refractor
on the ground, its entrance pupil being ~10 ft above ground. It *may*
make a slight difference in local seeing. I'll only know when I
get around to hoisting the doublet up on/in to the observatory.
