Another Modern Mechanix goodie:
http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2009/...peace-or-else/ Apparently the ICBMs are television controlled and require wearing Buck Rogers headgear to operate. The things that look like torpedoes with annular wings around them in the painting are based on the VB-10,11,12 "Roc" series guided bombs: http://www.designation-systems.net/dusrm/app1/vb.html Also the destructive effects of the "1-ton atomic bomb" shown with the blast map of NYC seem pretty optimistic for the time. Note that the article states that "British sources" state that the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki weighed "about 400 pounds". British sources were slightly off in their weight estimates... Little Boy weighed 8,900 pounds; Fat Man 10,300 pounds. I used to have the issue of the magazine this was in; the red ink just/ made/ the article. :-) IIRC, there is also a article about secret Luftwaffe warplane designs in the same issue... those are done with red ink also.
