Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, Massachusetts [ ... ] The observation is of a familiar source named SS 433 -- a binary star system within our Galaxy in the constellation Aquila, the Eagle, about 16,000 light years away. The black hole and its companion are about two-thirds closer to each other than the planet Mercury is to the Sun. The jets shoot off at 175 million miles per hour, 26 percent of light speed. Great story, but here's another nit-pick. I have trouble getting my head around that "two-thirds closer". Does it mean the distance between the black hole and the companion is one-third that between the Sun and Mercury? Or simply two-thirds? Comparing distance is a simple matter; comparing closeness seems odd to me. |

Axel Harvey commented on the language in a press release:

It sounds clumsy, but it isn't ambiguous: "2/3 closer" means "1/3 as far" or "1/3 the distance", while "1/3 closer" means "2/3 as far" or "2/3 the distance". Original site, for sci.physics: http://space.mit.edu/~hermanm/ss433.html ~ Yum. Black hole stuff. A highly interesting and informative 'press release', not what I expected. Look on page 8, and see the sharp peak between 6.2 and 6.3 angstroms - What is that? The two peaks to the right are Silicon and the peak to the left is Sulfur (just repeating what is stated), but the other peak is unlabeled. Interesting by all accounts at either rate. Has the exact mechanism for the jet formation been decided yet? |
