Default BBC - Physics names winners and losers

UK scientists studying high-energy light from space and the connection
between the Sun and Earth are to lose funding on a number of their
projects.

The body overseeing UK astronomy and physics says some of its
programmes will be cut back to save £81m by 2011.

But the Science and Technology Facilities Council says these savings
should be seen against an overall budget for the period of £1.975bn.

There have to be cuts somewhere to pay for the new aircraft carrier
"Achilles Heel" and the senior civil servants bonuses. The bonuses are
to allow them to continue to subsidise their thirsty German cars and
pay their London congestion charges. The 4 billion aircraft carrier
will actually cost 27 billion but never work properly. It will finally
be used to store the remaining North Sea oil reserves for its maiden
voyage around the Isle of Wight (in 2027) and will then be scuppered
to reinforce the Thames tidal barrier.... so senior civil servants can
continue to drive to their central London offices while waiting for
their knighthoods and fat pensions for early retirement.
