Default Beginner advice please

Firstly apologies if this has been covered before.
I have an interest in astronomy. More than a passing phase and greater than
my pair of binoculars I currently use.
Does anyone have any advice on what sort of telescope I should consider as
the next step ? I don't have a permanent home outside for it. I would even
be willing to try and build one. I understand simple optics, apertures etc.
I wont say money is no object but there must be some simple suggestions. Any
advice would be welcome please.
