Watched Sky at Night last night, the one with a host of people in Sir
Patrick Moores' garden watching meteorites, and one of the people speaking
was a Pete Lawrence. Was that you?

PS, I'm mostly a lurker here, but would like to offer some praise for your
photo's, they're inspiring. So much so, in fact, that my youngest son (12)
has been trying to get pictures too. Thanks.

No - the day is picked and fingers are crossed. Sometimes it works
sometimes it doesn't. Most of the time it does work to one degree or
another and I suspect the producer of performing special weather
related rituals in secret!

We've had weeks of cloud sometimes in which the S@N have pinpointed
one night for fliming. Invariably, on that night it clears!

Nooo I don't believe it, it will be your anti-cloud machine :-). I
forgot to mention something I saw last spring. I was in an aeroplane
flying from Guernsey to London Gatwick in the early evening. We took a
slightly more easterly route than usual and I noted the glorious
sunset over a thick layer of cloud covering Southern England as far as
the eye could see. Apart from a 10-20 mile diameter hole over Selsey.
Even the Isle of Wight was covered! I assumed you'd got the machine
running for some nice sunset & early evening pictures.

It's often the case that when the main land mass close to Selsey is
cloudy, the peninsular where Selsey Town is located (called the
Manhood Peninsular - I kid you not!) is cloud free. I think it's due
to the prevailing wind coming from the west. This means that it has a
run across the sea before reaching the trianglular Manhood Peninsular.
I'm no meteorologist but it seems that the sea has a significant
effect on the amount of cloud over the town. It also seems to help the
seeing.

If you get a clear evening do you film for say two or three shows?

Not normally, no. If there's a special event like the Perseids or an
eclipse, different bits of filming may appear in later programmes but
the specific bits we do in the garden are usually just for the next
show.

Hi Pete

I notice that Patrick doesn't get outside much these days is he still able
to get around now and how does he do his observing? Can he still get out to
his telescope with help?
