When that stuff comes flying out, it has undergone a large mass gain
per E=mc^2. So where does the mass gain come from except from being
pumped with energy of the accelerator itself? More to the point, why
don't those liberated 'particles' have an independant, stand-alone
existance outside the nucleus? Why do they decay back to 'nothing'
almost instantly, requiring sophisticated instrumentation to detect
their brief passing?

Their behavior seems more that of fleeting 'condensates'
arising from underlying symmetries within the nucleus. Of course this
is just naive observation by the uninitiated. :-) oc
