Rocket project gets cash boost

BBC News - Wednesday, 6 August, 2003, 06:42 GMT 07:42 UK

A project exploring the legacy of Britain's Blue Streak rocket
programme has been awarded money from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Blue Streak was the rocket tested at the RAF Spadeadam base in
Cumbria, during the late 1950s and early 1960s.

It was initially designed as a launch vehicle for medium range
ballistic missiles and to put satellites into space, but the project
was shrouded in secrecy.

Now a permanent archive about the project will be created at the
Tuille House Museum, in Carlisle.

The £49,000 award from the Heritage Lottery Fund will be used to fund
a project officer to research and develop a multi-media exhibition.

Research at Spadeadam contributed to Britain's developments in nuclear
and space science.

The site itself was awarded "Scheduled Cold War Monument" status by
English Heritage.

A Blue Streak exhibition will be held at Tuille House in October.

It will include photographs and recordings of people reminiscing about
the project.
