Default Slightly OT - Weather in Tuscany in late July

Hi all,

in late July I'm taking a walking holiday, based in Albiano, Tuscany.
Having never been to this area before I was hoping that someone in this
group could tell me whether
it is possible to use a Telescope and/or take astrophotographs, at that time
of year.

I am told that the Albiano area is free from light pollution so it would be
a shame to miss out on some good skies
even though it might be not very dark in late July.

Can anyone provide advice? - I have a Coronado PST but I will be walking for
most of the day so the nightime stuff looks
the better option.

regards

Robert

Southern European skies in July will be much darker than we're used to in UK
as twilight is shorter at low latitudes.

Can't comment about quality of the skies at that time of year though.

Do you are sure that the name it's Albiano? There is an Albiano d'Ivrea
but it's near Turin in North West of Italy.
If you want to have a black sky you must to go in Southern Tuscany
in province of Grosseto (Maremma), Monte Amiata and especially Monte Labro

http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcidosso (sorry, in Italian)

Usually the weather in July it's good, it's the most sunned and warm period
of the year but this year we cannot understand as it shall be, it's an year
with many weather anomaly.
Best greetings.

There are two small towns with names having Albiano in it and one
isn't in a too good position as far as light pollution is concerned.
The other one seem a far better location (Albiano Magra) and all the
times I have been driving beside it during night time the sky was
clear, no mist and darkish sky. As far astronomical night you have at
least 3 good hours at that time of the year (compared to none in the
UK). I would think it is a good overall bet that, yes, its worth
taking astro gear with you if el nino doesn't alter the normal pattern
of summer weather in central italy, which is normally very good at
that time of the year.
