* * Defense Industrial Base Assessment: U.S. *Integrated Circuit Design
* * * * * * and Fabrication Capability [...]
* * Overall, companies reported broad capability in the United States to
* * manufacture and design both conventional and radiation resistant ICs
* * across almost all technology nodes, materials, wafer sizes, and
* * device types. *Based on projections through 2011, this core
* * capability reportedly will be maintained despite some increases in
* * outsourcing to non-U.S. *locations. *During the 2003-2006 period,
* * U.S. *manufacturing and design activity was supported by significant
* * growth in corporate net sales, research and development (R&D)
* * spending, and capital expenditures. *The vast majority of R&D and
* * capital expenditures was allocated to activities within the United
* * States, with a small but growing portion directed to overseas
* * operations.

That's as of may 2009, and (per above) projected to 2011.
Oh my, good heavens to betsy, could 60 minutes have fudged their report
to make it sound more dangerous and exciting than it really was?
Oh shirley they wouldn't do *that*, would they?

: plus we have no manufacturing ability to produce power generators in
: our country.

None at all? *Huh, that's odd:

* *http://www.gereports.com/ges-us-turb...-in-2-65b-powe...
* * On the equipment side, GE will supply three combined-cycle power
* * blocks, including six Frame 9FA gas turbines, which will be
* * equipped with the latest emission reducing technology that will
* * support Kuwait's environmental needs, three steam turbines,
* * nine generators and a turbine and plant level control protection
* * system. The gas and steam turbines will be made at GE's plants
* * in the U.S. [...]
* * GE will begin shipping equipment by the middle of 2010.

I guess somebody at GE didn't get the memo that they
have no power generator manufacturing capability at their
Greenville South Carolina plant.

* * GE's Greenville, SC plant, seen above, is the largest gas
* * turbine manufacturing plant in the world, with over 3,000 employees
* * producing products for domestic and global export.

Amazing what one can find with 30 seconds of googling.
Not that it gives any in-depth knowledge, but as a sanity
check it's ... interesting.

GE is perhaps 90% outsourced, especially on their really big stuff,
partly because we don't seem to have the affordable energy to create
and mange accomplishing their really big stuff, much less the
affordable labor that's experienced enough where it counts.

Try or order up a 500 MW generator/alternator that 's all USof A.

well certinally the ever increasing trade deficit means were buying
stuff from overseas. lots of oil plus manufactured goods and we now
import over 50% of all the food we eat.

at some point all this will hurt our economy badly.We are sending
whats left of our wealth to others

hospitals send their patients x rays to be read by foreign doctors,
motorola and near everyones tech support is done by foreigners given
american names. One fellow asked me twice how to spell BOB

As I said, thus far their plan is working better than ours.

Except the trade deficit isn't "ever increasing". Compare the last 12
months to the 12 months that preceded them, for example.

thats only because our economy is so sucky theres less business going
on, people lack the money to buy stuff.

plus just have anything happen in the oil pipeline, mideast chaves etc
etc.

and that trade deficit will spike again.

like i said were under attack in a war, only this one is economic and
buys our country

i just did, divest, as large institutions have large holdings in
chineses companies, but people like you are afraid to take such
actions.

Start a trade war in the middle of a recession? Green can be the
next new high tech industry. The article I referred to was also
about how China is working to dominate that too.

Lets start our own new high tech 'green' industry.
We can beat then at this one, and NASA needs
a new reason-for-being.

So what's your solution, loony toon? Trade barriers and isolationism?

Democracy is the answer to that problem, as it is for most problems
facing the world. A dictatorship in China means they can get away
with all kinds of economic 'murder'. Like fixing the exchange rate
in such a way to drain our standard of living from us to them.

But there's just no way China can sustain it's economic growth under
a dictatorship. Corruption becomes overwhelming. It's only a matter
of time before it goes the way of the former Soviet Union.
