I tried to have some fun at Shawn's expense and got plonked.

My idea of heaven is to get plonked. I sometimes lie awake at night,
dreaming about getting plonked.

There is a widely used linguistics textbook which, to illustrate the fact
that we can recognize an unfamiliar word as a verb by its context, uses the
sentence:

"He once glonked an out-of-work actress."

There has been heated discussion as to whether the author is being
obnoxiously sexist or just funny!

Never saw "Life of Brian"?

Is there anyone here who *hasn't* glonked an out-of-work actress? Show
of hands please.

Speaking of linguistics, Michael, have you ever heard Noam Chomsky speak?

Yes, as recently as 2 days ago, at the LSA meeting in Boston.

Is that a studied and practiced monotone? It fascinates me that his
field is linguistics.

It's a monotone all right... It is what rhetoricians call a "running
style," where he moves from one idea to another without following much of an
outline. Some people love this style; others don't.

BTW, 2 notes from Boston:

I saw our friend Todd Gross on TV. He's the Channel 7 meteorologist.

And I take no responsibility for the record-breaking cold weather. Does
Todd?
