And all I had to say was the word "robot" in relation to space colonization: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butlerian_Jihad You want to build space colonies? Let the robots mine the materials and build the thing; or even terraform a planet for that matter. Once it's all ready to go, then the population shows up to live there. It could take decades (or hundreds or thousands of years to accomplish if you terraform a planet), but the robots won't lose patience doing it. They can be a labor-saving device for humanity, like a dishwasher, car (beats the hell out of a horse), Internet (beats the hell out of mailing fifty letters and reading fifty newspapers a day), and let people get on with the more important things in life...say learning how to manipulate a salt and pepper shaker like a acrobat, or finding where all the really choice Japanese erotic anime sites are at on the web by mental control rather than a Google search; the ones that don't send you to ten other sites before you finally get to the one you want, where the free thirty second preview clips of the green-haired girl getting gang-banged by the tendriled aliens is at. You know, important stuff like that. In the future, anyone shall be able to interact with websites like that in a virtual reality sense and have as many tendrils as they wish. But still for only thirty seconds at a time... which considering the present degree of patience in doing anything at all, will probably seem like a long-term relationship. Okay, it's not Wells' "Things To Cum"...excuse me "Come", but I'm willing to bet that the Morlocks gave the Eloi stuff like this. These are the wonderful things that are the dreamed-of destiny of humanity in its bold future age. Then one day Capitan Kirk shows up and blows up the computer, as is his wont...the goddamn spoil-sport. :-D Pat |

Just be entertained by his posts when they're (as they are occasionally, if you can separate wheat from chaff) entertaining, and otherwise ignore him. Only exceptionally rational men can afford to be absurd. Pat offered as a plausible scenario a major mining and industrial complex operated solely by robots, either teleoperated robots or operating under their own A.I. This won't come to pass for some time to come, in my opinion. Although I didn't agree with Pat, but this argument didn't bother me that much. An ignorant view that accompanied this argument is that mining is not all that difficult. Pat asked how many miners have doctorate degrees? I replied there are indeed doctorate degrees in mining engineering. Also there are many journeyman trades in the mining industry that go through challenging apprenticeship programs. I've known boilermakers, electricians and pipefitters whose level of expertise rivals that of an engineer. I was offended by Pat's ignorant and arrogant question but not unduly so. Pat then accused me of a misattribution and an outright lie. An "outright lie" that he declared loathesome and cowardly. An exceptionally rational man would check his facts before launching such extreme accusations. Pat didn't take 30 seconds to check his facts, Or else he would know the supposed misattribution was only his addled misreading of my post. Hop |
