You could have a look at Cartes du Ciel, it works on Ubuntu Linux as does
Sky Map Pro with a bit of a fiddle.

OSX = Mac - I have a 14" iBook ..


Chances are you'll be able to compile it for your Mac (I guess) using
the nasty X11 that you don't like ;-)


Further investigation shows it to be a nasty Windows app! Noo good at
all for the iBook.


Never mind - I'm seriously considering shelling out for Equinox 6 at
the mo. Its got everything I need.
