[quote=Lawrence]Taking images through the PST - is the result limited by virtue of the
supplied eyepiece, or can a webcam provide good enough resolution to show
prominences like these? I am wondering whether the purchase of the PST has
then to be followed by the purchase of expensive ancillary equipment before
good results like these can be obtained. I call it the 'gotcha' factor!
Life's experiences suggest that one has to be cautious in expecting a
product to actually do what you think it does! cynical mode off.

Thanks for all info.

Lawrence

Hopefully you'll enjoy the view [and you will!] for a few days before you try to capture images ;-). I've used various eyepieces eg 9mm to 40mm but the supplied 12mm Kelner is fine and all my pics taken through it in afocal mode. I must try again for fuller disk images via my Philips Toucam [~£50] which is used at prime focus. The latter route needs a lot of patience to get good results via free Registax software etc. Hope this helps.

In reality Coronado have largely shot-themselves-in-the-foot over the modestly priced PST against their other hi-end products and thus include many expensive PST accessories/ eyepieces [including the ridiculous MALTA diddy tripod - my equivalent came free with AP photo mag!] to raise extra revenue.

The Yahoo PST group is a private group. There appears to be no way to
join or access any of their material since there is not the usual "Join
this Group" invitation common to most Yahoo groups.

Strange - all I did was....

type Yahoo groups in any search engine
type 'coronado pst' in Yahoo Groups search engine
click 'join this group?'
enter chosen ID, password and email address
await email confirmation and respond
return to Yahoo Groups - Coronado PST group listed - sign-in and view msgs.

Thankyou nytecam. I do know how to join Yahoo Groups. ;-)
(Probably 55 of them, the last time I bothered to count them)

But! The link kept demanding membership before it would show the image.
So I posted accordingly. (Which you kindly quoted above)

Oddly, I seemed to be viewing a home page during this debacle. But had
I simply hit "Home" I could have joined and then (finally) been able to
see the image.

This is what I did in the end. I then deleted my post since it no
longer seemed relevant.

Isn't it rather unusual for linked Yahoo groups images to require
membership for viewing? This is also the first group I can remember
which describes itself as "Private". But given the ever spiralling
plethora of "Care in the Commmunity" types. Money grubbing porn
spammers. Or pyramidal fleecing operations. All willing to post
anywhere. One can presumably expect further examples of private Yahoo
groups in our occasionally sad little virtual world.

It would of course be extremely cynical of me to suggest that the PST
Group was in desperate need of further members and the blocked image
link was a remarkably clever, if decidedly suspect, means of boosting
membership so we could all see your pretty prominence pictures! But,
despite some misgivings, I'm not really that cynical. Am I? ;-)))))))

I rarely read msgs that need scrolling! Shouldn't you direct your rant at Yahoo?

Don't you have a scrolling wheel on your mouse Gavin?

My post was discussing what I thought to be relevant points related to
the PST Group set-up and hardly a rant. Unless you chose to read it
that way?

This group and others within the astronomy field are shrinking from
lack of posts. Forgive me for trying to increase the signal to noise
ratio in this partial vacuum.

I also have a sense of humour despite my lifetime interest in
astronomy. Do you?

The postings have certainly decreased in the last few weeks, must be
'cos Pete was on holiday.
On a more positive note, looks like Lawrence not only bought a PST, he
managed to join the Yahoo PST group as well!

Well I went ahead and bought a PST. My first view was of the magnificent
prominence developing near a limb - BTW I am lost for directions on the
disc until I check it out. Spectacular views - my first realtime
prominence.

I wasn't able to focus my webcam on the image, but for the moment I am just
enjoying the view.
